On the Suggestion That the Secretion from the Metathoracic Scent Glands of a Surface-dwelling Aquatic Insect, Gerris Najas (de Geer), (heteroptera; Gerridae) Has a Waterproofing Function

چکیده

The ventral surface of the pond skater, Gerris najas, is covered with a hair pile extremely resistant to water penetration. It is possible that the hydrofuge properties of the hair pile are maintained by an oil released from glands opening out on to the general body surface. Holdgate (1955) has reported findings indicating that many surface-dwelling and surface-breathing aquatic insects actively maintain high and constant contact angles during life. Many bugs are provided with scent glands located ventrally in the hind part of the adult thorax. The metathoracic scent glands of G. najas open into a median reservoir which in turn opens to the exterior by a single median pore. The secretion, an oily fluid, has a slightly unpleasant odour reminiscent of that from tfo-butyl alcohol. More than one previous observer has suggested that the hydrofuge properties of the hair pile of Gerris are maintained by the periodic release of secretion from the metathoracic scent glands. Alone amongst these, Brinkhurst (i960) has described experiments which appear to support this suggestion. The experiments are in no way conclusive, however, and reveal little other than the possible effects of various treatments on the state of filling of the reservoir. This paper describes experiments designed to measure the effect of sealing the external opening of the metathoracic scent gland system of G. najas on the resistance of the hair pile to wetting by surface forces.

The Metathoracic Scent Gland of the Leaf-Footed Bug, Leptoglossus zonatus

The metathoracic scent gland of 25-day-old adults of both sexes of the leaf-footed bug, Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Coreidae), are described based on optical microscopy analysis. No sexual dimorphism was observed in the glandular composition of this species. The gland is located in the anteroventral corner of the metathoracic pleura between the middle and posterior coxal pits. T...

Overwinter survival depends on immune defence and body length in male Aquarius najas water striders

Winter survival of organisms has a crucial effect on their fitness in a seasonal environment. We tested whether overwinter survival of male water striders, Aquarius najas (De Geer) (Heteroptera: Gerridae), is associated with the time of season they leave the water for winter diapause. This was performed by comparing parameters of males leaving the water at the beginning of autumn and 1 month la...

Structure and chemical analysis of the metathoracic scent glands of Carpocoris fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Turkey

Metathoracic scent glands (MTGs) of Carpocoris fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were studied in adult females and males. Structures of the glands were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and the volatile fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. MTGs of C. fuscispinus have many features in common: a large, median reservoir and paired late...

Fine structure and chemical analysis of the metathoracic scent gland of Eurygaster maura (Linnaeus, 1758) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae).

The morphology and ultrastructure of the metathoracic scent glands (MTG) of Eurygaster maura were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also, extracts of the volatile fraction of the MTG secretion from males and females were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In SEM investigations, MTG are composed of a reservo...

A new genus and species of Micropterous Blissidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Lygaeoidea) from Ecuador.

The new genus Barrerablissus and the new species B. strigosus are described from Napo Province, Ecuador. A key to the known genera of the Western Hemisphere Blissidae with apterous or micropterous condition is included. Dorsal and ventral view and digital photographs of head, pronotum, scutellum, metathoracic scent gland auricle and male genital capsule are added.
